Editorial Reviews

Robin, Earl of Huntingdon (Jonas Armstrong ), returns from the Crusades with his right-hand man, Much (the entertaining Sam Troughton), to find his lands and people at the mercy of the evil sheriff of Nottingham (Keith Allen) and his right-hand man, Sir Guy of Gisbourne (the effectively menacing Richard Armitage). With the aid of Sherwood outcasts Little John (Gordon Kennedy), Will Scarlett (Harry Lloyd), Allan-a-Dale (Joe Armstrong), and the feisty Maid Marian (Lucy Griffiths), Robin fights against the corrupt sheriff to free his people. This re-imagining of the Robin Hood legend first appeared on BBC-1 in October 2006 before making its BBC America debut on March 3, 2007. Christina Urban, Barnes & Noble

March 23, 2009: I'm an old-timer and grew up with the original Robin Hood series with Richard Greene and the Erol Flynn movie. I'm also an archer. There are two things that I like least about this series.

First is that the director doesn't seem to think archery is all that important to the story. The archery shots are totally unrealistic/impossible. There is no need to make them so spectacular that they completely lose there meaning. Also, the central theme of English archery is the longbow, not the laminated composite Eastern bow. Lastly on this theme is the fact that a bow would be rendered useless in short order if it were constantly left strung for any great length of time.

Second is that the series takes it's cue from most modern films in that it makes evil its own excuse for being. The bad guys are too bad and the good guys aren't all that good either. I found it to be too heavy with almost no humor (except for the stupid archery shots). Depressing, not exciting.
