    Editorial Reviews

British pop star Robbie Williams paid tribute to the swingin' style of Frank Sinatra and the great song standards of the 1950s on his 2001 album Swing When You're Winning, and this video -- recorded during a performance at London's Royal Albert Hall, with a 58-piece orchestra backing him up -- features Williams performing a set of classic standards and big-band favorites for an enthusiastic audience. Robbie Williams: Live at the Albert features Williams and the band swinging through 16 numbers, including "Mack the Knife," "Ain't That a Kick in the Head," "One for My Baby," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," "Beyond the Sea," and "The Lady Is a Tramp." April 05, 2004: Stunningly entertaining, unfortunately Williams purposely chose to be a mimic in sound and action. He tried to be his Swing idols, not do their stuff in his own way. A great voice, funny and riveting, he is captured here with excellent sound and ample camera angles. Despite the overwhelmingly positive response, this was a gutsy move at the time. A successful singer was taking a big gamble doing his parents' music. Now that he's proved he can perform a variety of material well, he needs to cut his own true path. This DVD is still well worth your time. It is another example of how enormously talented, diverse and charismatic Williams is.
