Editorial Reviews

This period drama about the American Revolution has an overlay of rhetoric that thwarts the action, flattening out the story about a man and his loved ones caught up in the events of the time. Tom Dobb (Al Pacino) falls in love with Daisy McConnahay (Nastassja Kinski), an aristocrat who deserts her class to fight alongside the rebels. Tom teaches his son Ned (Dexter Fletcher) everything he needs to learn, though the growing rebellion consumes most of his attention. Eventually, the Redcoats are mowed down in large battle scenes, as the ragtag Colonialists go to war. Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

June 08, 2003: This was what it was all about! At last someone stuck to history and told it like happened to thousands of every day Americans in the American Revolution. No, this is not another film about our founding fathers or rich, high-society revolutionaries. This story is about the average American, and is a composite of the common experiences of many Americans through the character played by Al Pacino. Even the often negative attitude of the ordinary citizen toward their new government, especially early in the revolution,is convincingly revealed by the main character. But soon the viewer feels the average American's inevitable reaction to the cruel tyranny of the British and is sympathetically pulled into the Revolution and the film through Pacino's skilfull portrayal. Watching this film makes you proud to be an American. A gutsy and convincing role by Pacino. Perhaps his best role yet. Not much Hollywood here, just good drama based on real historical incidents and expierences. If you want to know why we had a revolution with the British then watch this film. If you want to know what makes Americans uniquely ''American'' with defiant, independent behavior and a quickness to speak out for their rights, then Revolution is for you. But, if you want pure Hollywood, then stick with the Patriot. This film is the equal to The Crossing in drama and historical accuracy. Revolution should be required viewing in highschools along with The Crossing. This is about why we are who we are. One of the most underated films ever to come out of Hollywood. Great Fourth of July-or any time-fare!
