Editorial Reviews

The third film in the original Star Wars trilogy, Return of the Jedi (1983) completes the story that begins with 1999's The Phantom Menace and attempts -- not entirely successfully -- to tie up all the loose ends. For its initial DVD release in 2004, producer George Lucas outraged some fans by digitally substituting the image of Hayden Christensen (playing the young Darth Vader) for British actor Sebastian Shaw, who originally was shown as the badly disfigured villain under the black helmet. This was one of several changes Lucas made to have the earlier Star Wars movies conform to the six-film saga. Of course, he had also enhanced Return's special-effects scenes in 1997 for a theatrical, VHS, and laserdisc re-release. This Limited Edition, in addition to including the 2004 DVD cut, offers the original 1983 version on a bonus disc, enabling nostalgic fans to enjoy the same Jedi they saw in theaters more than 20 years ago. Enhanced or not, this film isn't as good as the previous two. It was designed to appeal to very young viewers, what with the generous amount of footage allotted to those cuddly little Ewoks. But let's not kid ourselves: if you're a Star Wars fan, you have to have it. And being able to choose between enhanced and un-enhanced versions has to count for something. Ed Hulse, Barnes & Noble

May 16, 2009: With the completion of the prequels, the entire Star Wars Saga comes together - finishing strong with the Return of the Jedi. I am a big fan of the original trilogy in its original form. I grew up watching VHS tapes of the originals and there is a great nostalgic feeling I associate with them. But there is one edit in the enhanced version that I really enjoy: Hayden Christensen being featured as Annakin Skywalker. This ties the prequel trilogy with the original trilogy and demonstrates that the entire story of the Star Wars Saga is Annakin's story.

Great movie, but it could have been better without the Ewoks. I think the final battle would have been real cool on Kashyyyk with the Wookies aiding the Alliance.

August 19, 2006: I have gotten my copy of Return Of The Jedi DVD, original and special edition in one DVD release. This is very worth getting. I was not expecting the nice quality in the release, but the original version is cleaned up and restored and the sound is terriffic. The original version is on the second disc, while the 2004 version is on the first disc. There is a 2004 commentary on the first disc and there is a newely recorded commentary on the original version on the second disc. There is also a very detailed documentary, over an hour long about the original versio on the second disc. I was surprised by the release, because I was hearing that the original versions were not going to be cleaned up, so I was shocked to see it has been cleaned up. THIS IS A GREAT RELEASE!
