Editorial Reviews

The third season (2006) of FX's hit summer series Rescue Me begins with Tommy Gavin's (Denis Leary) life coming apart at the seams. After his son was killed by a drunk driver in Season 2, Tommy's ex-wife, Janet (Andrea Roth), blamed him for the boy's death and now refuses to speak to him. Tommy's uncle Teddy (Lenny Clarke) murdered the drunk driver and now sits in prison. And Tommy's father (Charles Durning) is in failing health. On the unhealthy romantic side of Tommy's life, he continues his relationship with his cousin's widow, Sheila (Callie Thorne), while conducting affairs with his nephew's teacher and his brother Johnny's (Dean Winters) ex-wife, Angie (Marisa Tomei). But Johnny gets revenge when he begins romancing Janet, causing a huge rift between the brothers. Meanwhile, the rest of the firehouse members deal with their own problems: Franco's (Daniel Sunjata) new girlfriend (Susan Sarandon) takes his daughter to live with her; "Probie" Mike (Mike Lombardi) explores his sexuality with his male roommate; Jerry (Jack McGee) is forced to put his wife into a nursing home; Lou (John Scurti) loses all his money to a female scam artist and considers suicide; and Sean (Steven Pasquale) is worried Tommy will find out he's been sleeping with Tommy's neurotic sister, Maggie (Tatum O'Neal). This season of Rescue Me is also notable for the amount of controversy the episode "Sparks" generated over a sex scene that many viewers and members of the media -- but not episode co-writer Leary -- considered a rape. Fans can decide for themselves with this 4-disc, 13-episode set. Christina Urban, Barnes & Noble

August 09, 2009: While not as good as The second season, the third season of rescue me exponds on what has made the show one of my favorites. The characters are all likeable, even with all their flaws, you begin to wonder if any of the Gavins can make a good decision. One again the writers slam right into controversy (I.E. the hubba balu over the Sparks episode). In short great show, love it.
