This $17 million direct-to-video production by Hong Kong director Ringo Lam is the story of a fire-obsessed serial killer (Jean-Claude Van Damme) and the recently retired cop (Michael Rooker) intent on stopping him. After finding his hair follicle at a crime scene, a secret government agency clones the killer in the hopes that the replicant will aid in the search. Although he's full-grown, the clone (also played by Van Damme) has the emotional and mental capacity of a young child. Soon the naïve replicant begins to have visions of past murders and an abusive mother, leading him to escape and seek the killer on his own. ~ Skyler Miller, All Movie Guide All Movie Guide

December 31, 2002: I found a copy of ''Replicant'' used for sale at a video store for only three dollars. After reading so many negavtive reviews about this Van Damme flick, I was hesitant to buy it even at this price. However, when I took it home and watched it, I was pleasantly suprised. With his 2nd teaming with director Ringo Lam (''Maximum Risk''), Van Damme's portrayal of both a serial killer and his replicant clone was very entertaining. The action scenes exceeded most I have seen in straight-to-video movies, with many harrowing escapes and plenty of carnage. The ambulance scene in the parking garage is worth the price of admission on its own. Van Damme is especially effective as the naive replicant, and lended to its viewers some genuine laughs as he was introduced to commmon day situations for us, yet new to him. You can't go wrong by adding this Van Damme vehicle to your collection, and it will fit very nicely next to his other efforts in years past. Enjoy!
