Editorial Reviews

Following up on her comedic triumph in Wedding Crashers, the versatile Rachel McAdams makes her thriller debut in this gripping opus directed by veteran shudder film specialist Wes Craven. She plays Lisa Reisert, the resourceful customer service manager of a large hotel catering to government officials as well as visiting tourists. While flying home to vacation with her dad (Brian Cox), Lisa is essentially kidnapped onboard the plane by a fellow passenger who calls himself Jackson Rippner (Cillian Murphy, the creepy Scarecrow in Batman Begins). He's working for an unnamed terrorist group that aims to assassinate a Homeland Security bigwig who's about to check into Lisa's hotel, and he orders her to help facilitate the hit or lose her dad to a shooter lurking outside the Reisert home. It's a simple premise, but Craven develops it skillfully, without extraneous characters or time-wasting subplots. Once the basic situation is established, our attention is riveted on Lisa's plight: Trapped in an airplane with an admitted killer sitting next to her, can she possibly foil his plan without risking either her life or her father's? It's a tour de force for McAdams, who makes Lisa totally believable within the confines of a narrowly defined character. Murphy, too, is excellent, conveying oily charm and quiet menace with seeming effortlessness. Red Eye isn't a lengthy or complex thriller; it sustains suspense with constant forward motion, progressing seamlessly from one plot point to the next, and without a single superfluous scene. It's not unlike the very best B-movies of Hollywood's Golden Age, which told their formula-bound stories concisely. It's the best film Craven has directed in years. Ed Hulse, Barnes & Noble

August 20, 2008: I remembered I was on vacation visiting my favorite cousins and we all were trying to decide what to see in the theaters. We saw a trailer for Red Eye and I couldn't remember if I thought it looked good or not but after seeing it again it looked really good. We arrived at the theatre just in time when the movie started. The whole time my cousins and I kept on smiling whenever Cillian Murphy came on the screen. Don't get me started on his eyes. Rachel McAdams looks more mature and prettier with brown hair. My friends and I enjoyed the movie very much and couldn't stop talking about it especially Cillian Murphy and his gorgeous hypnotic blue eyes LOL. I even got the dvd and still never get tired of watching it. This is about Lisa who while on the red eye flight to miami meets Jackson Rippner and what seems to be like a romance turns into a thriller that involves having a room changed at the hotel she works at or her father will be killed. This is a really good movie and it takes place mostly on a plane. Wes Craven shows that he can do a thriller than his usual scary movies well with the exception of Scream of course. The movie has some jump out moments and is a little fast paced. Everyone did a good job especially the little girl and how she trips Jackson to give Lisa time to get away from him, oh man that was very smart and brave of her to do. The ending was good and don't worry Jackson lives. Too many good scenes to choose from but if I had to pick two they would be the the airport chase and they're at Lisa's house. I had no idea Cillian was irish, he did the american accent The only problem I have is that the film was short. The gag reel is funny and liked the behind the scenes. Thank you for choosing Red Eye, we hope you'll fly with us again.

March 08, 2007: This movie begins well and charms its audience into thinking that maybe, just maybe, they will get the suspense thriller they were promised. Unfortunately, the movie rides itself off the rails about 3/4 of the way through the story (much like the promising but very disappointing High Tension). This film is yet another movie that just does not know how to end itself, relying on cheap plot twists and a tacky ending.
