Time travel, parallel universes, and a host of other sci-fi tropes become fodder for comedy in the BBC's wacky, long-running series Red Dwarf. Writers-creators Rob Grant and Doug Naylor mold a sci-fi sitcom that follows the exploits of Lister (Craig Charles), a deep-space miner who emerges from stasis 3 million years into the future on the ship Red Dwarf to find that his only companions are Rimmer (Chris Barrie), a hologram of his dead bunkmate; Cat (Danny John-Jules), a humanoid who evolved from his pet feline; a mechanoid servant named Kryten (Robert Llewellyn); and Holly (Hattie Hayridge), the ship's computer. The notable episodes of Series V -- a season considered outstanding by Red Dwarf fans -- include "Holoship," wherein Rimmer is taken aboard a holographic ship that makes all his dreams come true. The crew must battle to escape a planet created from Rimmer's psyche in "Terrorform." And Hayridge makes her final appearance as Holly in the episode voted by BBC viewers as the best Red Dwarf ever, "Back to Reality," which finds the crew hallucinating after being doused with a space squid's venom. Series VI begins with the Red Dwarf being stolen in "Psirens," causing the crew to face mind-sucking aliens; in "Gunmen of the Apocalypse," Kryten contracts a computer virus; and in "Out of Time," the crew are astonished to receive an SOS call from themselves 15 years into the future. Despite its low-budget production values -- the ship was redesigned one season because the model fell off a shelf at the BBC effects department -- Red Dwarf continues to be one of the best, and best-written, comedies to come out of the U. K. Barnes & Noble
