    Held prisoner by a psychotic truck driver who has stopped taking his meds, a suicidal swindler uses her formidable skills as a grifter to turn the tables on her unstable captor in this satirical black comedy from first time feature filmmaker Kieran Galvin.     August 26, 2008: Got it on Netflix. Feeling a bit grumpy. Hit play. Thought I was going to die. The first ten minutes is hard going. Suicide attempt. Girl scrap. Unfortunate accident with a dog. Lucky it was sound effects and not vision as I was eating. But then, wow, it kicked into gear and got progressively more interesting until I found myself slipping into a world that is obviously manufactured but which really resonated. I laughed a lot, and I have to admit I cried too. But it all ended on a happy note even though a couple of people died along the way. It made my night. Thought I'd share.

    June 04, 2008: Puppy is an enigmatic and thought-provoking mystery / romantic thriller / hostage drama set in a picturesque part of Australia which is surprisingly green and lush. The story is unpredictable and funny in a sometimes-shocking, sometimes-playful way and the director manages to convey menace without resorting to violence. I was thinking about the morals in this film for quite a long time afterwards because I found myself cheering for two people who really should have been locked up.
