    Editorial Reviews

This innovative musical began its life as a sweet musical take on the life of King Charlemagne's eldest son, until the producer handed it to Bob Fosse. Hot on the heels of his success with Cabaret, he spiked the show with his characteristically dark and sexy dance moves, adding a narrator named Leading Player, played by Fosse stalwart Ben Vereen. The decadent 1972 staging eventually won five Tony awards -- including best direction and choreography for Fosse. This 1981 version -- new to DVD -- was videotaped live in Ontario and features Vereen reprising the Tony-worthy performance that set his career on fire. William Katt, who here plays the curly-haired heir and title character, went on to television fame for a year or so as the star of The Greatest American Hero. Also on board are immortals Chita Rivera and Martha Raye. Barnes & Noble

August 04, 2004: I enjoyed this show, even though it wasn't the best taping the dancing was good and I enjoyed seeing Chita Rivera and Ben Vereen. I have always wanted to see them on the stage and I finally go too.

October 06, 2000: This production, while being an okay souvenir of the show, doesn't come up to par with what Bob Fosse created for Broadway. While Ben Vereen and Chita Rivera are terrific, as expected, William Katt in the title role simply doesn't have the chops for the role. His singing is often flat and strained and makes for an uncomfortable watching experience. While it's great to have a record of Fosse's choreography in one's library, the overall flatness of the production makes it a video not very often played.
