I watched this movie with my 4 year old son and we were both held spellbound by its use of music and visuals to tell a wonderful tale of resiliency. Poverty and cruelty play a part in this film, but ingenuity and compassion come out on top. Bad things happen in life. My son has been privileged and lucky to be surrounded by love. However, I want him to understand the world is complex--I don't want to sugar coat it.
This movie helped us with many discussions about topics some may consider to heavy/rough for a 4 year old-from what it is to age (the grandpa isn't mean--just protective and in pain), to death is permanent (my son held his guinea pig up at one point to show him the wolf-a warning to stay away from a creature like that if you are a guinea pig!). But we also had lots of laughs about the cat's character, the duck and the boy sliding on the ice, and the general wit of many of the scenes.
This little movie is masterful for all ages--parents just need to be engaged with this one. Don't plop your kid down and go do laundry for the initial screening. I also love the French film, the Red Balloon. That movie didn't sugar coat either and it was masterful as well.
I Also Recommend: The Red Balloon.

This is a beautifully animated little film. Peter and the Wolf is one of my favorite stories and musical compositions. Brings back so many good times as a child listening to,and learning about.classical music. This is a fantastic way to introduce both to children.
As an English teacher and music teacher, I read the story, discuss the musical themes, etc. of the musical composition and then show the film to my class. They love it (of course, the girls hide their eyes at certain points). A rare treat and a great addition to anyone's library.
