Editorial Reviews

Several of the episodes in Perry Mason's fourth season did without the services of costar William Talman (aka luckless prosecutor Hamilton Burger), who as a result of a wild and highly publicized party at his home was fired from the series by CBS. Raymond Burr, who of course headed the cast as defense attorney Perry Mason, rallied his coworkers Barbara Hale, William Hopper and Ray Collins, demanded that Talman be reinstated, threatening to quit the show himself unless CBS reversed its decision. Ultimately of course, Talman was rehired, but not before such guest actors as Walter Burke and Paul Fix filled the gap by portraying various one-shot prosecutors. Outside of these backstage intrigues, Season Four was distinguished by a wealth of familiar faces in the supporting-player category, beginning with a young Robert Redford in the season opener "The Case of the Treacherous Toupee" and including in later episodes such future Oscar winners as Louise Fletcher and James Coburn. Also seen were quite a few TV-series stalwarts, including Sue Randall (Miss Landers on Leave It to Beaver), Connie Hines (Carol Post on Mister Ed), John Banner (Sgt. Schultz on Hogan's Heroes), Adam West (Batman himself) and Gavin McLeod (The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Mister Ed). Despite a shaky start, the season ended on a high note, with Raymond Burr winning his second Emmy Award. Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

September 19, 2009: Perhaps because of the absence of Hamilton Burger, some additional life seemed to be added to the beginning of this particular set of a reliably enjoyable series. The plots and writing seemed more lively than usual.

I Also Recommend: Columbo Mystery Movie Collection 1989, The Player, Perry Mason: Season 1, Vol. 1 & 2, Perry Mason - Season 2, Volume 1, Perry Mason - Season 2, Volume 2.

Best Lawyer/Detective Show EVER!!by Robert-Long

August 02, 2009: Perry Mason is the archetype of all lawyer shows. Yes, it's from about 50 years ago and in black-and white, but so what? It's still the best. You'll enjoy all the twists and shock endings about as much as Hamilton Burger (the D.A.) doesn't. Question: Is Burger really such a bad D.A. or is he just trying too hard to beat Perry? Answer: I think he's trying too hard. If he were really that bad against everyone he'd have been fired (if appointed) or ordered not to run (if elected). Police Lieutenent Arthur Tragg is a very good cop, honest and hardworking. Two nice things about him--1) he respects Perry and 2) he learns from him. TRragg's investigations have definitely improved over the course of the series. Paul Drake is Perry's private detective. He's very good at his job. Perry Mason himself is the ultimate defense lawyer. He's always calm and unflustered no matter what happens around him. He always believes in his clients and their innocence (even when they lie to him, which they usually do). He not only gets his clients acquitted, he gets them cleared by exposing the true murderer. Older people will rmember the seires from either its original run in the '50s and '60s or from syndication. Younger people: think Matlock, only 30 years younger and stronger and tougher. Get the entire series; they're good for the entire family to watch together. One note for parents: Everyone smokes. Point out to your kids that it was cool then, but it's yucch now.
