Mekka lekka hi, mekka hiney ho -- your wish has been granted! Pee-wee's Playhouse is available on DVD for your "bein' wacky, getting nutty" pleasure. The Emmy-winning Playhouse is a ceaselessly inventive wonderland of a series where "anything can happen." Playhouse combines animation, marionettes, puppets, Rube Goldberg contraptions, and costumed characters, all under the direction of arrested adolescent Pee-wee Herman (Paul Reubens). There are delights everywhere you look and anthropomorphic characters that will make you feel right at home, including Chairy, Globey, Magic Screen, Conky the robot (who dispenses the secret word that elicits screams every time it is uttered), the disembodied Jambi the gene, the Cowntess, the beatnik Puppet Band, and the claymation Dinosaur Family. Flesh-and-blood Playhouse regulars include Cowboy Curtis (Laurence Fishburne), Captain Carl (Phil Hartman), Reba the Mail Lady (Law and Order star S. Epatha Merkerson), the King of Cartoons (William Marshall of Blackula), and Miss Yvonne (Lynne Marie Stewart), the prettiest lady in Puppet Land. A young Natasha Lyonne (American Pie) pops up as one of the Playhouse Gang kids -- a show element wisely dropped by Season 2. This being a children's series, there are lessons to be learned, such as how to make ice cream soup and how to make a raisin dance in carbonated water. Pee-wee moves from one set piece to the next with joyous abandon. These pell-mell episodes can be watched again and again to enjoy favorite segments (like the vintage cartoons courtesy of His Majesty) and to catch the little Fleischer-esque touches you surely missed the first time around. Welcome back, Pee-wee: We love the Playhouse...but we wouldn't want to marry it. Donald Liebenson, Barnes & Noble
