Editorial Reviews

Although undergoing a sex change is not as unusual a procedure as it once was in days gone by, it is still hardly an everyday occurrence -- especially in rural, conservative western Illinois, where Normal takes place. After 25 years of marriage, Roy Applewood (Tom Wilkinson) surprises his wife, Irma (Jessica Lange), by announcing that he'd rather be a woman, and in fact has felt like a woman for most of his adult life. As Roy undergoes the standard hormone and prosthetics process to transform himself into "Ruth", his sudden gender switch elicits shock, surprise, and anger from friends, family members, and co-workers alike -- but also is met with support and sympathy from a number of extremely unlikely sources. Tastefully produced and acted, the film wisely avoids shock value in its subject matter and condescension in its treatment of middle-America types. Directed by Jane Anderson, who also adapted the script from her own stage play Looking for Normal, the made-for-cable Normal premiered March 16, 2003, on HBO. Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

October 17, 2009: "Normal" is the story of a Mid-western couple that has been happily married for over 20 years and has two children. On their wedding anniversary the husband confesses to his wife that he has felt trapped in the wrong body for many years and has decided to finally do something about it. What unfolds is the story of how the wife, the children, the workplace, and the church react to this situation. It is told with the utmost sensitivity and good taste. This couple deeply and truly loves each other and that is not changed by the husband's predicament. The depth of the emotional honesty and the superb acting in this film brought tears to my eyes. There is much to ponder here.

January 22, 2004: A wonderful movie told with great sensitivity and humor. Initially, I thought Wilkinson was an odd choice to play Roy/Ruth (first impression is that there is nothing effeminate about him to make it 'believable'), however, that mere fact is what makes it work (not to mention he was wonderful in the role). Jessica Lange was terrific as a woman struggling to accept the changes with her husband as well as her own changes as she transitions into menopause. All in all, a terrific cast and enjoyable movie despite it's controversial topic.
