After a startling season finale in which viewers watched narcissistic plastic surgeon Dr. Christian Troy (Julian McMahon) get his face slashed by a mysterious villain known as the Carver, Season 3 of the controversial FX series gets off to a rousing start: with a funeral. But don't start mourning yet -- Nip/Tuck has never been your typical drama, and the opening moments are par for the course for this season's increasingly fanciful and soapy story lines. While Christian recovers from the attack (and, we later learn, from being raped), Sean McNamara (Dylan Walsh) hires Atlanta surgeon Dr. Quentin Costa (Bruno Campos) to keep the practice afloat. Sean's wife, Julia (Joely Richardson), still unsure about her decision to divorce Sean, takes the kids and moves into a small apartment. Later, she joins with McNamara/Troy anesthesiologist Liz (Roma Maffia) and Christian's hated former flame Gina (Jessalyn Gilsig) to open a plastic-surgery recovery spa. Sean's son, Matt (John Hensley), is still emotionally shattered from the revelation that Christian is his father, as well as the fact that his former girlfriend Ava (Famke Janssen) was actually a man. His path of self-destruction over the course of Season 3 leads to a horrible act of violence in the finale. As for Sean, he gets involved with a woman (Anne Heche) on the run from the Mob. Finally, Christian decides that he does indeed love Kimber (Kelly Carlson) and asks her to marry him. The unique medical episodes this season include: a 400-pound woman fused to her couch in "Momma Boone"; scar removal on a gorilla's face in "Kiki"; a creepy episode in which a mortuary assistant is creating his very own bride of Frankenstein in "Frankenlaura"; a man who hires Christian to amputate his perfectly healthy leg in "Ben White"; and in a tale that's based on medical fact (as all the scenarios are on Nip/Tuck), Christian and Sean remove a 17-year-old calcified fetus from the body of a 65-year-old woman. Of course, all of this is certainly overshadowed by the two-hour season finale, "Cherry Peck/Quentin Costa," in which the Carver -- dramatically and disturbingly -- is revealed. Drawing over 5.7 million viewers, the finale was the most-watched basic cable episode of 2005. Christina Urban, Barnes & Noble
