In recent years, the F/X network has been giving HBO stiff competition for dominance in the field of original cable programming, and this innovative series is one of its strongest contenders. The 2004 season finds cosmetic surgeons Christian Troy (Julian McMahon) and Sean McNamara (Dylan Walsh) still plying their trade among the wealthiest denizens of glamorous South Beach. Cocky Christian continues to amass wealth and women, while married man Sean frets about turning 40 and struggles to keep his family together. The year's 16 episodes are uniformly strong, and Season 2 gets off to a good start by introducing Vanessa Redgrave as Erica Noughton, the narcissistic mother of Sean's wife, Julia (Joely Richardson, Redgrave's real-life daughter). Things start turning weird when Christian finds it increasingly difficult to succeed with women and Sean decides to shake up his life after surviving a potentially fatal car accident. Later in the year, Famke Janssen joins the cast as Ava Moore, the sexy "life coach" who engages in a steamy affair with Sean's troubled 17-year-old son, Matt (John Hensley). Jill Clayburgh and Jessalyn Gilsig make repeat appearances; the former is particularly effective as a disgruntled former patient who tries to make things tough for the surgeons. One of the most touching episodes is "Manya Mobicka," which features Aisha Tyler as a young Somali woman who hopes Christian and Sean can repair the damage caused by her genital mutilation. The year ends on a jarring note, with a shocking denouement to the Ava-Matt drama and a blood-curdling confrontation with the Carver, a mad slasher whose victims have been populating the McNamara-Troy office for months. You'll never forget this gripping season finale, which caps a terrific year for this extremely well written and well acted series. Ed Hulse, Barnes & Noble
