    Like The Vanishing (1988 and 1993), Nightwatch is an English-language version of a foreign-made film with the original director hired to remake his own movie. Ole Bornedal was the writer-director of the suspenseful 1994 thriller, Nattevagten, which had no U.S. release immediately on the heels of its success in Denmark. For the second time around, Bornedal directed, but Steven Soderbergh wrote a new script based on Bornedal's original film. Both were produced by Michael Obel. Nattevagten was Bornedal's directorial debut, and reviews praised the film for the claustrophobic atmospherics and suspense generated from the very first establishing scene. For the 1998 English-language remake, the artistic elements of the original gave way to name actors, slicker production values, and the more conventional grindhouse genre approach, opening with a brutal prostitute murder in a pre-credit sequence. University student Martin (Ewan McGregor) ignores warnings to take a city-morgue night watchman job for extra cash. Odd happenings at the morgue are linked to a serial killer, and Inspector Thomas Cray (Nick Nolte) investigates. Soon Martin's girlfriend Katherine (Patricia Arquette) learns that Martin has become a key suspect. However, some might suspect Martin's edgy friend James (Josh Brolin).     May 09, 2005: "Nightwatch" is a 1997 English-language treatment of the original 1994 Danish "Nattevagten", both directed by Ole Bornedal. Same deal as the recent "The Grudge" (Ju-on) by Japanese director Takashi Shimizu. "Nightwatch" is a very creepy movie, with moments of voyeuristic intensity that are repellent to the level of a David Lynch flick. There is some outstanding acting in spots, particularly by actress Alix Koromzay, who plays a prostitute with a forlorn, hopeless sincerity that is excruciating to watch. Despite the previous reviews, Ewan McGregor doesn't bring that much to the movie and actually adds to the overall weirdness with his Americanized accent and puzzled, elfin features. He's a good actor but is either miscast or misused in this movie. Nick Nolte has probably had few scarier characters to play, but has been scarier playing less frightening roles. He does polish up his diction and delivery, but it's still the same whiskey-and-gravel voice that inhabits anything he portrays, and it's hard to see him as anything but Nick Nolte. This film once again reinforces the difference between European and American audience tastes. Despite being as bloody, creepy, genuinely nasty, but far more intelligent and stylish than most better-known thrillers of its type, I assume it sank like a rock when released. That's a shame, because it is well worth checking out, with a lot of interesting visuals and production details. I bet the tall man with flowing blonde hair, seen in a group at the end of the movie, is a director cameo. The picture of the condemned man in the security room is Lewis Paine/Powell, the psycho Lincoln assassination conspirator who brutally slashed and stabbed Secretary of State William Seward. And I'll never again hear the children's song "This Old Man" without flashing on this movie.

    April 08, 2004: Every film that Ewan McGregor is in is AWESOME!!!!!!! Moulin Rouge, Shallow Grave, Trainspotting, Velvet Goldmine, Brassed off!!! They are superb!!!!! He is the master of the acting world!!!! Night Watch is a classic! A must see!!! Horrific scenes that will keep you hidden behind the cushion for hours!!!! He's acting is so real and so is his accents!!! Cant wait for his next film!!! PLUS he is soooo good looking!!!!
