    Editorial Reviews

Don't be misled by the director's name; "Bernard Shakey" is really rock star Neil Young, who is also the center attraction of this music documentary. There's no plot, of course, just 103 minutes' worth of concert footage, filmed during Young's 1979 tour with his back-up band Crazy Horse. Musical highlights include "My, My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue)," "Thrasher" and "Powderfinger." If you missed this film, we refer you to the critically and financially successful record album of the same name. After both the film and record version of Rust Never Sleeps were sent into distribution, there was still enough material left over for another album, Live Rust. Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

March 13, 2003: If you're like me, and bought Neil Young's album ''Live Rust'' twenty-some years ago, and heard about the concert movie, ''Rust Never Sleeps'', but never saw it in the theaters, this DVD is a must buy (The album is basically a soundtrack for the movie). Some times weird, some times wonderful, it will not fail to entertain. Neil looks, well, so YOUNG! Remember, this was 1978, or so, and Young was fresh from a decade-long run of incredible music, with Buffalo Springfield, CSN&Y, and then a solo career, often with Crazy Horse as his backup. Sadly, though, after ''Rust'', Young hibernated in the 80s, with only occasional flashes of brilliance (e.g. ''Trans'' and ''Old Ways''). Rust Never Sleeps opens with an acoustic set, featuring the wonderful ''Sugar Mountain'', and the touching ''I Am A Child''. The ''weird'' parts hinted at above, include the appearance of a group of Star Wars-like characters called Road Eyes (roadies). Funny and surreal, don't be put off by these characters, the music is the important thing. The electric set includes ''Cortez the Killer'', ''Cinammon Girl'', and ''Hey, Hey, My, My''. Stick around after the closing credits, and the band encores with ''Tonight's the Night''. This is two hours of Neil at his best...enjoy!
