April 13, 2009: If your only experience of the sparkling wit and endless chemistry between William Powell and Myrna Loy is through the "Thin Man" movie series, you've only seen a small part of their on-screen partnership. The most long-running and one of the most successful Hollywood partnerships ever, this box set allows you to see where things began in "Manhattan Melodrama," ostensibly starring Clark Gable but more impressive for the instantaneous and dazzling comedic flair that Powell and Loy brought to their very first paired roles. "Evelyn Prentice" is an uncharacteristic foray into "women's weeper" melodrama, but not even a adultery/murder plot can keep these two from portraying their specialty: a married couple who are actually in love. "Love Crazy," "Double Wedding," and "I Love You Again" offer sparkling scripts and plenty of opportunity to sit back and admire this wonderful screen couple, who offer banter and sex appeal that is as fresh today as the day these movies were first shown to appreciative audiences. So real was this coupling that hotel managers often mistook them for an actual married couple, leading to some interesting conversations, no doubt! Pick this set up, order "The Great Ziegfeld" and "Libelled Lady" (one of their very best), and have yourself a Powell/Loy movie marathon. I promise you won't regret it.

I Also Recommend: The Great Ziegfeld, Libeled Lady, The Complete Thin Man Collection, The Thin Man, Wife vs. Secretary.
