Created by veteran American sitcom writer Fred Barron, My Family was one of the rare instances in which a comedy conceived for U.S. television was transplanted to Britain after the series wasn't picked up in the States. The transplant seems to have taken, as My Family has run six seasons, as of this writing, in the U.K. since premiering in 2000 on the BBC (it airs in the U.S. on BBC America). My Family features Robert Lindsay as Ben Harper, dentist, friend, and harried father of three. His wife, Susan (Zoe Wanamaker), is a tour guide for the local museum and the one who really rules the roost. Their children include Nick (Kris Marshall), the screw-up who can't hold down a job; Janey (Daniela Denby-Ashe), a stereotypically flighty teenager concerned with her friends and boys; and Michael (Gabriel Thomson), the overachiever and brainy know-it-all. Typical to the plot of most American sitcoms, My Family derives its humor from the antics of Ben's kids and his humorous spats with his wife. March 11, 2008: I was accidently scanning the channels and found this show on BBC. I laughed at every show. I decided I had to have the DVD series. This is comedy at its best. The jokes and antics are not the same things you have seen over and over. It is real funny life situations that are carried on with perfect timing by the actors. You will laugh your way to perfect health with this series. I hope they release more of the series here in the US. Please!!!
