Mystery writer Jessica Fletcher (Angela Lansbury) continues her career as an amateur detective in the 22 episodes of the 1986-87 season, which maintains the high level of quality established in previous years. The writing remains excellent, although uncredited borrowings from classic mystery novels become more frequent this season. The Murder, She Wrote tradition of stuffing every episode with guest stars recognizable from old TV shows and vintage movies is adhered to, with a plethora of top actors appearing in the season-opening two-parter, "Death Stalks the Big Top." Jackie Cooper appears as Jessica's brother Neil, and Courteney Cox (long before she found Friends over at NBC) plays his granddaughter Carol. Other guests that flit in and out of this novel episode include Greg Evigan, Florence Henderson, Martin Balsam, Alex Cord, Laraine Day, Ronny Cox, and Charles Napier. The next episode, "Unfinished Business," reintroduces recurring characters Seth Hazlitt (William Windom) and Sheriff Amos Tupper (Tom Bosley). A young George Clooney pops up in "No Laughing Matter," which finds Jessica investigating a murder at the reunion of two estranged stand-up comics. A clever bit of "stunt casting" has Tom Selleck playing his popular private eye in "Magnum on Ice." One of the season's best episodes is "The Days Dwindle Down," an intricately plotted story inspired by the classic whodunits of Ellery Queen, with Jessica linking a present-day murder to a killing that took place 30 years previously.
