    The ruler of England discovers the value of common friendship in this historical drama. After the death of her husband Prince Albert, Queen Victoria (Judi Dench) is despondent, and she remains in mourning for two years after Albert's passing. When one of her servants suggests that a daily ride on horseback might be a tonic for the Queen's health and spirits, a Scotsman named John Brown (Billy Connolly) is hired as her guide and groom. At first, the Queen shows no interest in riding, though Brown readies a horse for her each day; finally, after several days, Mr. Brown speaks frankly to the Queen, announcing, "Honest to God, I never thought I'd see you in such a state!" While her court is shocked, the Queen is refreshed that someone would speak to her so directly. Soon the Queen is riding with Mr. Brown every morning, and she discovers him to be a friend and confidante who will speak to her as a person and not as a potentate. However, many are shocked by their relationship, believing that the commoner Mr. Brown is using his friendship for political advantage -- or worse, that he's become her lover.     July 13, 2006: "As Time Goes By" fans will find Dame Judi and Geoffrey Palmer in more subdued roles, but "Mrs. Brown" is one of the finest foreign films available. This people's story chronicles Queen Victoria's friendship with Scottish servant John Brown, whom she allowed, as one documentary put it, to say things to her no other person would have been allowed to say ("I was only speakin' me mind, for God's sake!"). The script does half the work, the stars the other. Billy Connelly, master of music, comedy and Glasgow accents acts with a rare genuine touch, bringing alive a true character. Anthony Sher as Disraeli also does a fantastic job capturing the illustrious P.M.'s personability and ability to capture the Queen's attention through his wit. It's a little like Steinbeck -- people's lives made interesting through great story-telling.

    December 23, 2001: Judi Dench fans will not be disappointed with her portrayal of Queen Victoria in ''Mrs. Brown.'' As Britain's stern but all-too-human monarch, Dench gives the energized, ''in-character'' performance we've come to expect of her. With Billy Connolly at her side in the supporting role, the film captures the warmth of an unusual but solid friendship. A must-see for fans of English drama.
