Editorial Reviews

Between 1937 and 1939, Hungarian-born character actor Peter Lorre -- best known for his memorable appearances in M, the Maltese Falcon, and Casablanca -- played diminutive Japanese sleuth Kentaro Moto in eight modestly budgeted but ingeniously crafted B-movies for 20th Century Fox. Intended as a companion to Fox’s widely successful Charlie Chan series, the Mr. Moto films quickly established themselves as superior entertainment. Although they always constituted the bottom half of a double bill, these fast-moving, scrappy little mysteries frequently overshadowed the bloated, ponderous star vehicles with which they were paired. Three of the four Motos included in this box set can be counted among the series’ best. Mr. Moto Takes a Vacation (1939) pits the mild-mannered investigator against one of his toughest foes, a never-seen master criminal known as Metaxa. The two leading suspects are suave, sinister character actors Lionel Atwill and Joseph Schildkraut, and even the savviest viewers will be hard pressed to figure out which one is the guilty man. Mr. Moto’s Last Warning (also '39) revolves around a plot to sabotage the Panama Canal, and Mr. Moto in Danger Island ('38) finds the Japanese detective tracking diamond smugglers in Puerto Rico. The only weak sister in the group is Mr. Moto’s Gamble (also '38), a stodgy whodunit that was hastily converted from a Chan to a Moto following the sudden and untimely death of Fox’s original Charlie, Warner Oland. On the whole, both volumes of this series remain delightful examples of vintage low-budget Hollywood filmmaking at its finest. Ed Hulse, Barnes & Noble
