Editorial Reviews

The name Agatha Christie is synonymous with genteel murder mysteries of the "fair play" variety. Christie afforded armchair detectives ample opportunity to decipher the clues she laid out in the baffling stories adapted for the BBC series Miss Marple, which has finally made its way to DVD. The mystery writer’s most popular literary creation, spinster sleuth Jane Marple, deducts her way through a dozen whodunits collected on three discs. Among the bestselling Miss Marple novels dramatized for TV are "A Caribbean Mystery," "Murder at the Vicarage," "The Mirror Crack'd," and "The Body in the Library." ("Body" was the first one to be broadcast.) The delightful Joan Hickson is letter-perfect as Marple, whose placid exterior and seemingly single-minded devotion to knitting mask her formidable intellect, keen appreciation of human behavior, and extraordinary intuition. In the time-honored Christie manner, supporting characters move through these stories like pieces on a chessboard, and clues to a murderer's guilt are always there for you to see -- assuming, of course, that you're clever enough to grasp their significance. Faithfully translated to the small screen from Christie's immortal tales, the Miss Marple mysteries are never less than thoroughly engrossing, and Hickson's interpretation of the character will enthrall anyone who's ever wanted to match wits with a master detective. The DVD collection includes biographies of Christie and Hickson as well as a complete list of the Miss Marple stories. Ed Hulse, Barnes & Noble

March 17, 2009: This set includes "A Murder is Announced" one of Miss Marple's best cases. It also includes "A Pocket Full of Rye" one of the lesser known cases. The movies are entertaining, and are a good way to unwind. The last movie, "The Body in the Library" is a classic.
