    Editorial Reviews

Nickey (John Cassavetes) is a small-time Jewish gangster in trouble with the mob. He calls on his lifelong friend Mikey (Peter Falk) for help. During the night the two spend together, the power of their friendship is undermined by their mutual nastiness and pressing financial concerns. Elaine May's script was allegedly taken from an episode in the life of her uncle. ~ Brian Whitener, All Movie Guide All Movie Guide

March 20, 2007: Well, unusual and fascinating are adjectives which would describe much of John Casavetes' life's work. Though the film features great improvisational acting from a great ensemble of players, Casavetes takes center stage. Elaine May's script and direction is appropriately spare allowing Falk, Casavates & company ample room to explore. And that's really what the film turns out to be. Far less than a crime drama involving a mafia rat and his best friend, who betrays him, it's a exploration into the hearts and minds of two men whose friendship has deteriorated. Highly Recommended.
