Editorial Reviews

Eccentric characters, strange murders, and lush countryside vistas combine to make this British crime drama -- based on the collection of books by Caroline Graham -- a favorite among mystery fans. Four of the episodes included in this five-story set aired on the BBC during the show's first season in 1998, but the first, "The Killings at Badger's Drift," serves as the series pilot and aired in March ’97. This initial mystery deals with an elderly woman who suspiciously dies of a broken neck, although the local doctor believes she committed suicide. Next up for Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby (John Nettles) and his young partner, Sergeant Gavin Troy (Daniel Casey), is "Written in Blood," a whodunit wherein the secretary of a readers' circle is found murdered after the group's meeting with a bestselling novelist. A woman is found dead in the river -- but she didn't drown -- in "Death of a Hollow Man." And there's something peculiar afoot in "Faithful unto Death," an episode involving a lethal road collision, a poisoning, and a missing businessman's wife (played by The Inspector Lynley Mysteries star Lesley Vickerage). Finally, in "Death in Disguise," a man living at a new age commune is found dead at the bottom of a staircase, and Barnaby and Troy must figure out whether it's an accident or a murder. November 12, 2009: As with the other MidSomer Murders sets we've purchased, this set matches them in quality. The series was wonderful when it was broadcast on PBS and we love watching the episodes again now. Good plots; acting and visual settings. Well worth having in our opinon.

June 20, 2009: Midsomer Murders is a series of mysteries taking place in England. The draw for most viewers are the predominance of clues and slow precise expert unraveling by Dectective chief Inspector Barnaby and his side kick. It is full of human foilbles and realistic motives. Their is humor, tragedy and the drama of ordinary characters who elicit hate and sympathy as their lives unfold. You literally have to listen to every word and really have no clue as to the murderer(s) are until the very end when all fits into place. Having viewed the whole series I look forward to replaying all a second time. I highly recommend this series.

I Also Recommend: Rebus - Set 3, Inspector Lynley Mysteries 1 & 2: Great Deliveance.
