Editorial Reviews

Eccentric characters, strange murders, and lush countryside vistas combine to make this British crime drama -- based on the collection of books by author Caroline Graham -- a favorite among mystery fans. Four of the episodes included in this five-story set aired on the BBC in the show's fifth season, but the first, "Tainted Fruit," actually aired in Season 4. The mystery facing Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby (John Nettles) and his young partner, Sergeant Gavin Troy (Daniel Casey), is the murder of a manor house owner, who is found with a syringe full of veterinary tranquilizers protruding from her stomach. "Market for Murder" involves the inspectors in a hunt for someone who is killing the members of a ladies' reading circle. A temporal peculiarity flummoxes Barnaby and Troy in "A Worm in the Bud," as a woman found dead in the woods would seem to have written her suicide note after the fact. There's something quasi-mysterious afoot in "Ring Out Your Dead," as church-bell ringers are being killed off one by one. Finally, in "Murder on St. Malley's Day," the distinguished Devington School is the setting for a student organization that dabbles in death. Christina Urban, Barnes & Noble
