    Editorial Reviews

Eccentric characters, strange murders, and lush countryside vistas combine to make this British crime drama -- based on the collection of books by author Caroline Graham -- a must-see for mystery fans. This five-story collection, culling episodes mainly from early 2000, finds Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby (John Nettles) and his young partner, Sergeant Gavin Troy (Daniel Casey), on a series of cases, encountering a parade of odd and original characters, divining the truth, and arresting the killer. Family man Barnaby often has his wife, Joyce (Jane Wymark), and daughter, Cully (Laura Howard), mixed up in the goings-on. The first of the two-hour Midsomer Murders included here is “Garden of Death,” in which a family’s desire to turn the village memorial garden into a tea shop leads to murder. Next is “Destroying Angel,” wherein Barnaby attends the funeral of the owner of the Easterly Grange Hotel, only to discover that the reading of the will is no simple matter. Barnaby has to solve the murders of two men found dead -- and naked -- in “Electric Vendetta,” a mystery that includes crop circles and whispers of extraterrestrial murderers, which our hero isn’t buying. A vanishing stranger causes trouble for a local doctor in “Who Killed Cock Robin?” while “Dark Autumn” features Gillian Kearney as Police Constable Jay Nash, whose relationship with Troy blossoms into love. Kearney also may be recognized by fans as June Forsyte from the 2002 edition of The Forsyte Saga . Christina Urban, Barnes & Noble

November 12, 2009: Another set of wonderful episodes from this British television series. Well worth purchasing it. MidSomer Murders always has complex and interesting plots and is well-acted. Love the visual settings where the episodes were filmed.

December 21, 2005: It doesn't get better than this series. I love all of the Agatha Christies, the Dorothy Sayers. etc., but this series I have watched over and over and always find something new. I highly recommend it.
