Opera directors Arrigo Boito provides his take on Goethe's celebrated Faust legend in this 1989 production of Mefistofele. Under Boito's direction, the story, despite taking several imaginative lyrical and orchestral liberties, remains largely faithful to the original concept. Dancer Samuel Ramey is featured in the title role, and is supported by the chorus and orchestra of the San Francisco Opera. ~ Tracie Cooper, All Movie Guide All Movie Guide

May 16, 2003: Well actually of course the Devil cannot win out in the end, but what acting and his singing is spectacular. Actually all the cast was in fine voice, their acting extroverted but tasteful. And you won't feel short changed by the sets, the finale scenery unforgettable.

April 20, 2003: The San Francisco company puts on a very nice production here. The chorus gets wild and crazy in the Sabbath, and they bring the show to a majestic close in the finale. Sets and costumes are excellent. Samuel Ramey's voice sounds wonderful and he obviously loves playing the Devil. His acting always leaves a little to be desired, but he does better than usual here. Gabriella Benackova excells as Marguerite and Helena. Dennis O'Neal doesn't quite match the others. His voice bleats a bit, and his acting is OK. This is Boito's ''hit'' opera, and you can only wish he had written more that equal it.
