Airing in the U.S. on the PBS series Masterpiece Theatre over two weeks in November 2005, this BBC1 production of The Virgin Queen is notable for its lavish period costumes and attention to historic detail. Written by Paula Milne, the sweeping series stars Ann-Marie Duff (The Magdalene Sisters) as Elizabeth I, England’s queen from 1558 to 1603. As the miniseries begins, Queen Mary I (Joanne Whalley) holds the throne and does everything in her power to undermine support for Elizabeth, including locking her in the Tower of London. The queen eventually dies, and Elizabeth -- with her loyal adviser William Cecil (Ian Hart) and childhood friend Robert Dudley (Tom Hardy) backing her -- claims the crown. The remaining episodes explore the tumultuous life of one of England's most famous monarchs, from her unfortunate relationships and struggles to bear an heir to the triumphs and failures of her 44-year reign.
