    Editorial Reviews

Long before The Sopranos endeared its Mafia family to TV audiences, Married to the Mob pulled off the same neat trick in movie theaters. Moreover, the 1988 blockbuster did so despite the seemingly incongruous casting of Michelle Pfeiffer as the widow of hit man Alec Baldwin. With her trademark blonde tresses dyed brunette, Pfeiffer affected a convincing Noo Yawk accent, cracked gum authoritatively, and displayed admirable street smarts by repeatedly repulsing the amorous advances of mob boss Dean Stockwell (whose rib-tickling turn earned this veteran actor a well-deserved Oscar nomination). Matthew Modine supplied winning support as a boyish, seemingly inept FBI agent, with Mercedes Ruehl and Joan Cusack contributing memorable performances as well. Director Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs) utilized dubious plot elements and potentially unsympathetic characters to craft high-spirited, laugh-provoking entertainment that still sparkles.
