    Editorial Reviews

In this tense and suspenseful science fiction thriller, Charles Keith (Gregory Peck) is the ground commander in Houston who monitors the space mission of three astronauts. Buzz (Gene Hackman), Jim (Richard Crenna) and Clayton (James Franciscus) have their lives put in jeopardy when the oxygen supply in the space capsule drops. Ted Dougherty (David Janssen) is sent to try and rescue the doomed astronauts. When it becomes clear there is not enough oxygen, it is suggested that one of the men commit suicide to allow the other two to live. Jim, the unit commander, makes an excuse to spacewalk. Under the guise of making repairs, he cuts himself loose from the life line and drifts away into the cold darkness of space. Russian cosmonauts race against time to try and save their American counterparts. An Oscar-winner for "Best Special Visual Effects," the film also picked up nominations for "Best Cinematography" and "Best Sound." It was later retitled Space Travelers. October 09, 2000: It's 1971 and the United States launches ''Ironman One'', the first in a series of long duration space flights to pave the way for interplanetary deep space missions of the future. For 5 1/2 months astronauts Jim Pruett (Richard Crenna), Buzz Lloyd (Gene Hackman) and Clayton Stone (James Franciscus) conduct a rigorous and grueling science and engineering mission that reveals a lot about space flight that no one ever knew before. As things appear to be headed in a downward spiral, the Director of Manned Space, Charles Keith (Gregory Peck), orders the mission ended early. However, an unknown glitch in the spacecraft's propulsion system strands the crew in orbit with only 42 hours of oxygen remaining. As the Space Agency decides to abandon the crew to Fate, Senior Astronaut Ted Dougherty (David Janssen) uses his bulldog determination to convince Keith to launch a rescue mission, despite the seemingly overwhelming odds against it and the approaching Hurricane Alma. A noble sacrifice and surprise help from a Soviet Cosmonaut make this film reflect the words of the First Man to Fly in Space, Maj. Yuri A. Gagarin, Soviet Air Defense Forces, ''Mankind never gains anything without cost. There never has been a bloodless victory over Nature.''
