Editorial Reviews

Thanks to the creative vision and steady guidance of writer-producer Donald Bellisario, this above-average detective drama really hit its stride in Season 2, allowing the characters to evolve gracefully while presenting some genuinely offbeat and effective plots. The 22 episodes of 1981-82 showcase Tom Selleck -- comfortably ensconced in his star-making role -- with John Hillerman becoming an increasingly able second banana. "The Woman on the Beach" finds Magnum's pal Rick (Larry Manetti) meeting an attractive young woman who confesses that her life is in danger, and then learning that she actually died 35 years ago, supposedly a suicide. Did Rick encounter the ghost of a murder victim? The two-part outing "Memories of Forever" reunites Magnum with the wife he has long believed dead; now she is married to a Vietnamese big shot negotiating with the U. S. government for the return of American soldiers' remains. This is a powerfully poignant story line of the type that would become less common in subsequent seasons. "The Sixth Position" guest-stars Andrea Marcovicci as a famous ballerina whom Magnum is hired to guard. In "Try to Remember," the P.I. gets amnesia after crashing his car while searching for a missing woman -- who turns up dead, making him the chief suspect in her murder. "Double Jeopardy" is a clever whodunit in which Magnum's home base, the estate of thriller writer Robin Masters, becomes a location for moviemakers. When one of the stars is shot "accidentally," Magnum launches an investigation that unearths surprising facts. The season-ending "Three Minus Two" is another first-rate whodunit; it involves the murder of a partner in an exclusive fashion-design firm. Beverly Garland and Jill St. John guest-star in this exceptional episode, capping off a very successful season. Ed Hulse, Barnes & Noble

February 09, 2009: Love, love, love Tom Selleck and the Magnum series. Takes me back. The combination of mystery and humor is unbeatable entertainment. I especially love the series because it doesn't take itself too seriously and the setting in Hawaii is extraordinarily beautiful (and so is Tom!).
