From the first harrowing, heart-stopping moments of its record-breaking $12 million pilot to the closing scenes of the season finale, Lost is a roller-coaster ride the likes of which hasn't been seen since Dr. Richard Kimball took to the road in search of the one-armed man. Emboldened by the success of Fox’s thriller 24, which similarly employed an ambitious narrative arc, ABC took a chance on Lost’s daring concept: Survivors of a plane crash wash up on a mysterious tropical island, where the hardships include starvation and clashing personalities, as well as some sort of evil creature, a weird metal hatch, and...a polar bear. The talented cast -- along with supernatural twists and strange occurrences cooked up by the creative team -- made Lost an instant TV hit and make it an even greater delight on DVD. Matthew Fox heads up the 13 regular characters as Jack, a doctor who becomes the leader of the ragtag group. Filling out the cast are: Kate (Evangeline Lilly), a beautiful girl with a dark secret; bad boy Sawyer (the mesmerizing Josh Holloway); Sun (Yunjin Kim) and Jin (Daniel Dae Kim), a Korean couple whose marriage is on the rocks; father-and-son team Michael (Harold Perrineau Jr.) and Walt (Malcolm David Kelley); devoted stepsiblings Boone (Ian Somerhalder) and Shannon (Maggie Grace); former rock star and heroin addict Charlie (Dominic Monaghan); good-hearted Hurley (Jorge Garcia), who provides comic relief; former Iraqi Republican Guardsman Sayid (Naveen Andrews); Claire (Emilie de Ravin), whose pregnancy survived the crash; and philosophical survivalist John Locke (the fantastic Terry O'Quinn). Each episode focuses on one or more of the characters' lives, and through a combination of flashbacks and current events on the island, the audience is introduced to a felon, a murderer, a lottery winner, a torturer, and a Mob enforcer, among others. If we had to choose the best episodes of the season, they would have to be: the Emmy-nominated "Walkabout," in which we learn the truth about Locke; "Hearts and Minds," an episode that delves into the strange backstory of Boone and Shannon; "Outlaws," which examines Sawyer's disturbing childhood; and the season-closing "Do No Harm," in which Claire's baby is born just as a major cast member exits.

The runaway hit of ABC's 2004-2005 TV season, the weekly, hour-long drama series Lost began at a point that in any other case may have been an ending: a passenger jet was torn apart in mid-air, crashing on an uncharted Pacific Island. Stripped of all vestiges of the civilized world, the 48 survivors were forced to fend for themselves in their new tropical surroundings, which departed from the "norm" for similar castaway dramas by boasting a bizarre and frequently incomprehensible topography, not to mention a most unusual variety of wildlife -- include at least one polar bear! Among the principal survivors were dissolute doctor Jack Shepard (Matthew Fox); fugitive Kate Ryan (Evangeline Lilly); has-been rock star Charlie Pace (Dominic Monaghan); the reclusive and mysterious John Locke (Terry O'Quinn); hot-tempered and self-serving James Sawyer (Josh Holloway); chauvinistic Korean husband Jin Kwon (Daniel Dae Kim) and his much-put-upon wife, Sun (Yunjim Kim); resourceful former Iraqi Republican Guard Sayid (Naveen Andrews); estranged siblings Shannon and Boone Carlisle (Maggie Grace, Ian Somerhalder) -- she's a bitch, he's a control freak; divorced dad Michael Dawson (Harold Perrineau) and his sullen young son, Walt (Malcolm David Kelley); roly-poly comic relief Hugo "Hurley" Reyes (Jorge Garcia); and very pregnant Aussie Claire Littleton (Emilie de Raven). Forced to rely upon one another to stay alive, this diverse group shares a number of sinister secrets and oft-unsavory interrelationships, with the truth behind each character revealed piecemeal via flashbacks and little unexpected twists of plot. Adding to the suspense, at least during the series' first season, was the apparent presence of a person not on the passenger list, who seemed determined to bump off the hapless castaways one by one, and a mysterious, terrifying yet unseen monster-like creature that killed one survivor in the pilot episode.
