Editorial Reviews

The first volume of Warner's Looney Tunes Golden Collection included many of the studio's classic cartoons, but a surprising number of the best ones were omitted -- much to the chagrin of diehard animaniacs. This four-disc box set redresses that situation by including virtually all the great Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies shorts that didn't make the cut in Volume One. Some 60 cartoons in all have been meticulously restored and remastered, and many are presented uncut for the first time in years, owing to the lamentable recent trend in purging vintage 'toons of politically incorrect content. Bugs Bunny, the Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote, and Tweety Bird and Sylvester get one disc each, with the fourth DVD compiling other memorable pieces of animation from Warner's legendary "Termite Terrace" studio. The Chuck Jones-directed classics "One Froggy Evening" -- with the singing Michigan J. Frog -- and "What's Opera, Doc?" featuring an operatic Elmer hunting Bugs ("Kill the wabbit!") are here, along with the hunt for the last Do-Do bird in the surrealistic "Porky in Wackyland," directed by Bob Clampett, and the well-remembered Tex Avery spoof of The Jazz Singer, "I Love to Singa" (featuring "Owl Jolson"). Also on hand are quite a few of Warner's cartoons parodying top Hollywood stars of the '30s and '40s, the best of which is "Hollywood Steps Out." Other standouts include "Bugs Bunny Rides Again," a hilarious western spoof; "The Great Piggy Bank Robbery," a bizarre takeoff on the various grotesqueries seen in the 1940s "Dick Tracy" comic strip; and "Gorilla My Dreams," a Bugs vacation gone wrong in which a mother gorilla tries to adopt him. Fully half of the assembled shorts are accompanied by commentaries, and the box set also includes two full-length documentaries, nine behind-the-scenes featurettes, and a timely, all-new cartoon, "Daffy Duck for President." The perfect complement to Warner's first Looney Tunes collection, Volume Two skims the remaining cream from the studio's extensive cartoon library; it's hard to imagine a Volume Three topping or even matching the previous two collections. Not Enough of the Great Onesby Anonymous

March 22, 2006: This just doesn't have enough of the really hysterical ones we all loved as kids. There's no Marvin The Martian, no Tazmanian Devil,no Hillbilly Hare,no "I Love to Singa", no Rabit of Seville,no bugs bunny tormenting the bull in the ring. OK, so it has the coveted singing frog...but just not enough to make this worth buying.
