    Editorial Reviews

Little House on the Prairie remains a sterling example of family-friendly television, reaching out from Laura Ingalls Wilder's books to touch viewers' hearts and wrench their emotions. You could count on plucky Laura rallying Walnut Grove around some misfit or outcast, bratty Nellie getting a well-deserved slap, and personal tragedy putting a character's faith to the supreme test; and the 1977-78 season hit all the marks. In the season opener, "Castoffs," Laura's beloved dog dies, and she refuses to accept the stray that her father, Charles (Michael Landon), brings home. In "My Ellen," a grief-stricken mother believes that Laura is her recently deceased daughter. Little House saved the best for last. The two-part "I'll Be Waving as You Drive Away" (also available separately on DVD) is a series benchmark and is ranked by TV Guide as one of the best television episodes of all time. Melissa Sue Anderson earned an Emmy nomination for this devastating episode, in which aspiring schoolteacher Mary loses her eyesight and departs from Walnut Grove to a school for the blind in Iowa. Not that there weren't good times. In "The Creeper of Walnut Grove," Laura's hapless investigation of a spate of thefts leaves Charles with green hair. In the touching "I Remember, I Remember," Charles is delayed getting home for his wedding anniversary, while his wife, Caroline (Karen Grassle), recalls the days when she and Charles were schoolmates. Joining the cast this season are Merlin Olsen as gentle giant Jonathan Garvey and Linwood Boomer as Adam Kendall, a compassionate teacher who will help Mary overcome her self-pity and "learn to do for herself." Guiding light Landon imbued this series with strong family values and a sense of decency (even outlaws Frank and Jessie James, in the episode "The Aftermath," are transformed by the Ingallses). There is nothing like a return to Walnut Grove to lift sagging spirits. Donald Liebenson, Barnes & Noble
