    Editorial Reviews

The Ingalls family ventures west in this 1974 made-for-TV movie that launched one of television's most beloved series. Sanitized to be sure, but less saccharine than the eventual series, this adaptation of Laura Ingalls Wilder's book follows incongruously blow-dried Charles (Michael Landon, who also directed), his hearty wife Caroline (Karen Grassle), and their daughters Laura (Melissa Gilbert), Mary (Melissa Sue Anderson), and Carrie (Lindsay and Sidney Greenbush) as they leave their home in the "Big Woods" for a place where land is more bountiful. There are rivers to cross and hills to climb, not to mention harsh weather, scarce food, and predatory dangers as the close-knit family builds their first little house on the Kansas prairie before those "blasted politicians" force them to move. Victor French is welcome company as uncouth frontiersman Isaiah Edwards, who helps the Ingallses. Onward to Walnut Grove, and Season 1, which is available in a DVD box set.
