Over the course of its ten-season run, Little House on the Prairie was big on Very Special Episodes. Viewers warmed and heartened by the adventures of the frontier family the Ingallses could count on their heartstrings being yanked as if tied to a team of runaway horses. This classic two-part episode, which closed the show's fourth season, is a real keeper. It is Melissa Sue Anderson's finest two hours; not only a benchmark for this beloved series but, according to TV Guide, one of the best television episodes of all time. Hard times hit Walnut Grove, but none harder than aspiring schoolteacher Mary Ingalls's oncoming blindness, and her departure from Walnut Grove to a school for the blind in Iowa. Linwood Boomer joins the cast as Adam Kendall, a compassionate teacher who helps her overcome her self-pity and "learn to do for herself." By the time Mary returns to bid farewell to Walnut Grove and leads the congregation by reciting from a Braille Bible, there will not be a dry eye in the house. Donald Liebenson, Barnes & Noble
