A supercharged blend of hyperkinetic action, over-the-top violence, and sophomoric banter have made the Lethal Weapon series one of the most successful movie franchises in Hollywood history. Now you can get all four of them in this deluxe DVD box set. The first and most suspenseful and emotionally nuanced entry in the series, Lethal Weapon wastes little time establishing the friendly friction between the partners, Martin Riggs, a Los Angeles cop (Mel Gibson) who is the ultimate loose cannon, and Roger Murtaugh, his stable veteran partner (Danny Glover). For their first encore, Lethal Weapon 2, the codependent crime fighters face off against a suave but sadistic smuggler (Joss Ackland) apparently protected by diplomatic immunity. Joe Pesci, making his initial appearance in the series, figures prominently in the proceedings as small-time motor-mouthed hood, Leo Getz. In Lethal Weapon 3, Murtaugh is counting the days to his retirement, but Riggs needs his help to locate the ex-cop who's distributing confiscated weapons to L.A. gangbangers. While there's more Riggs-Murtaugh byplay than in either of the first two pictures and Pesci is back as Leo Getz, most of the fireworks are provided by Rene Russo, who joins the series as high-kicking Internal Affairs officer Lorna Cole. Lethal Weapon 4 provides an ample supply of the dizzying action sequences and goofball humor expected by series fans but spices things up with the addition of two new costars: comedian Chris Rock, for bonus laughs, and Hong Kong action star Jet Li, for menace. Li makes a sublimely sinister heavy whose nearly superhuman athletic abilities are vividly demonstrated in eye-popping fight scenes. Having hit upon a winning formula with the first film, director Richard Donner has resisted the urge to tamper with it, contenting himself with making each sequel bigger, faster, and louder, while still intermingling lighthearted banter and violent action. The Lethal Weapon Collection contains a wealth of extras, including behind-the-scenes and additional footage, interviews, a theatrical trailer, audio commentary, documentaries, production notes, and interactive menus.
