    Editorial Reviews

Unlike the other shows in the Law & Order franchise, Criminal Intent doesn't focus only on the apprehension and prosecution of malefactors; it also shows the criminals planning, executing, and in some cases covering up their crimes. In some ways this makes Criminal Intent more interesting, because it gives the viewer more information than the investigators initially have and creates added suspense: How will the police uncover the facts and identify the perpetrator? This series concentrates on particularly complex crimes assigned to the NYPD's Major Case Squad, a crack team of experienced first-grade detectives. Vincent D'Onofrio stars as Detective Robert Goren, a brilliant and eccentric investigator with a gift for assimilating minor, seemingly insignificant details and then replicating an evildoer's thought patterns. Goren's partner is Detective Alexandra Eames (Kathryn Erbe), a no-nonsense cop whose procedural skills help keep the investigations grounded. Captain James Deakins (Jamey Sheridan) supplies bureaucratic backup, and Assistant District Attorney Ron Carver (Courtney B. Vance) lends his prosecutorial expertise to the cases whenever legal issues arise. Criminal Intent shares with the other Law & Order shows a fondness for dialogue-heavy, procedure-saturated scripts, but when the acting is this good, it's easy to overlook the relative lack of physical movement. The Season 3 (2003-4) episodes are nearly all winners, and especially notable are "Happy Family," wherein Goren investigates the bludgeoning of a rich family patriarch, and "Pas de Deux," depicting a terminally ill bank robber who manipulates accomplices to help him with his heist. "Conscience," perhaps the season's best episode, explores the murder of a neurologist who believes she can communicate with a woman in a vegetative state, and the ingenious method Goren uses to catch the criminal will keep audiences guessing until the last moment. Season 3 showcases the series' writers, directors, and actors at the peak of their respective games and makes this box set a must-have item for fans of the show. Ed Hulse, Barnes & Noble
