    Editorial Reviews

Given the opportunity to turn out a Sacha Guitry-style spectacle, director Roberto Rossellini charts his own neorealist course for The Rise of Louis XIV. It's as if a documentary cameraman was let loose in the royal court of the 17th Century Sun King, here played by Jean-Marie Patte. The use of unfamiliar actors in the major roles adds to the film's realism. Though shown to be the product of a decadent lifestyle, Louis is depicted as being trapped by his royalty, forced in spite of himself to be a raconteur and trendsetter. The Rise of Louis XIV was one of several innovative films made for French television by the Italian Rossellini. Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

November 18, 2009: Boring and a great disappointment. I burst out laughing when I saw the actor who plays louis xiv he looks and acts like a buffoon, louise de la valliere who was a young teenager when she was involved with louis looks about 35 years old but mainly it is just incredibly boring. And I love reading books about Louis xiv and the court of versaille. Skip this one

March 23, 2009: What surpised me about this movie is how relevant it is to our own time. The young King Louis XIV is faced with a financial crisis due, in part, to a corrupt financial minister who has been robbing the public treasury. Louis has him arrested and charts a path to turn France into an economic power while at the same time controlling the nobility by impressing them with his new palace at Versailles and his tastes in fashion. Fortunately, medicine has improved since those days when doctors cured patients by bleeding them.
