    Editorial Reviews

There have been several movie versions of this tale written by Marion Crawford in 1909, including this standard Mexican drama directed by Tito Davison. The setting is changed from Italy to Mexico as Angela, a lovely but headstrong young woman rejects the suitor her father has chosen for her to follow her heart and choose a young army officer (Jorge Mistral). When he is called away to war she later hears that he has died in battle and racked by despair, she enters a convent. Soon after she has dedicated her life to the church the supposedly dead army officer shows up on her doorstep, quite alive and well. The dilemma now is excruciating -- should she give up her vows and marry him, or continue with a life she has grown to value? Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
