By its third year, this edgy, episodic thriller has evolved into a far more complex dramatic organism than the 1990 feature film from which it was originally adapted. The brainy, beautiful, and deadly Nikita (Peta Wilson) still toils for the mysterious and sinister Section One as an alternative to spending life in prison for a crime she didn't commit. But things change quite a bit as the 22 episodes of the 1999 season unfold, including the metamorphosis of Nikita’s relationship with fellow agent Michael Samuelle (Roy Dupuis). First, she nearly loses him in the opener, "Looking for Michael"; then, she sees his wife, Elena (Samia Shoaib), and son, Adam (Evan Caravela), slip away from him in the tumultuous events surrounding Season 1's pursuit of Elena's villainous father, Salla Vacek (Hrant Alianak). Still, the pair’s maturing relationship takes second stage to some of the elaborate capers presented during Season 3. In "Hand to Hand," a Femme fan favorite, Nikita infiltrates a modeling agency while searching for a terrorist financier. The agency is just a cover for a high-class brothel and an underground "fight club" that pits the beautiful women against each other for sport. "Imitation of Death," a particularly tense episode, finds Section One confronting an especially vicious terrorist who brainwashes kidnapped children into carrying out his plans. Nikita and fellow agents Walter (Don Francks) and Birkoff (Matthew Ferguson) contemplate a mutiny when "Operations" (Eugene Robert Glazer) gives them a succession of irrational orders in "Slipping into Darkness." The two-part season finale brings the Michael-Nikita romance to a head when, against orders, they arrange a covert rendezvous while ostensibly carrying out a dangerous mission. With its stylish visuals, intricate story lines, and complex character relationships, La Femme Nikita helped changed the face of dramatic TV, influencing such later series as Alias and 24. That influence is definitely apparent in the third season's lavishly produced, spellbinding episodes. Ed Hulse, Barnes & Noble
