The 22 episodes of the 2000 season reflect the continually evolving nature of this trendsetting show, which covered the same themes and utilized the same labyrinthine plotting methods later employed so effectively in such shows as Alias and 24. Clearly ahead of its time, Nikita had a devoted following almost from the beginning, even if it never became a ratings powerhouse. Picking up on the previous year's most surprising plot twist, Season 4 opens with trained assassin Nikita (played, as always, by the sublimely sexy Peta Wilson) still showing the effects of her "reprogramming" at the hands of her enemies. In the opener, "Getting Out of Reverse," she uncharacteristically orders the elimination of a fellow Section One operative and endangers the lives of children during a mission. Her partner and boyfriend, Michael (Ray Dupuis), spends several episodes trying to get her back to normal (or, at least, what passes for normal in Section). Our favorite installment from this group is "No One Lives Forever," in which Nikita is finally granted her freedom on the condition that she never again contact anyone from Section. That seems like an easy condition for her to accept -- until she is offered the chance to eliminate "Operations" (Eugene Robert Glazer), the man who killed her father. Another excellent outing is "Line in the Sand," pitting Section's best operatives against a sinister, deadly Red Cell agent known as the Cardinal. As yet exhibiting no real diminution of quality, La Femme Nikita in Season 4 remains a terrifically engaging show. Ed Hulse, Barnes & Noble
