This San Francisco Opera performance is a lovely account of a work that is so famous, even the operatically challenged know it. What makes this DVD so fundamental is that it brings together the soprano and tenor who, for the last decades of the 20th century, were the interpreters of the leads in Puccini's first masterpiece. Born and raised in Modena, Italy, Mirella Freni and Luciano Pavarotti may not have looked like the young, starving Parisians of La Bohème. But, as they demonstrate here, great operatic acting isn't rooted in appearance, but in the voice -- and the roles of Rodolfo and Mimi seemed to inspire these singers to higher levels than anything else they sang. They give us this drama of love and early death with unforgettable beauty and passion. If Pavarotti was at this point past his greatest Rodolfos, he is nonetheless very moving. Freni's Mimi is stunning as always, full of a simple eloquence and vocal beauty that make her character's destiny that much harder to witness. You can hear this pair at their youthful best in a Decca recording of the opera, made nearly a generation before this San Francisco performance. But seeing them at play is unforgettable for those who heard them live, and this DVD makes it possible for that thrill to be shared by new listeners. Patrick Giles, Barnes & Noble
