Editorial Reviews

Oddly billed as "The 4th Film by Quentin Tarantino," Kill Bill, Vol. 1 is the film-geek auteur's self-consciously ostentatious fusion of American gangster movies, Japanese manga, and Chinese martial-arts films. Willowy Uma Thurman stars as a female assassin targeted for extinction on her wedding day by former coworkers under the direction of her mysterious old boss, Bill (David Carradine). After spending years in a coma, she unexpectedly revives and sets out to wreak vengeance on the killers who murdered her loved ones. Vivica A. Fox and Lucy Liu are the first team members to feel Uma's wrath, and there are more to follow, presumably in Vol. 2. (Shortly before release, the epic film was cut into two shorter parts.) There's no more plot than this; Tarantino presents just enough exposition to prepare the viewer for a succession of over-the-top fight scenes, each more outlandish than the last. His visual and aural references to various films are too numerous to count, although you don't have to be familiar with the other movies to enjoy this one. Kill Bill represents the director at his dynamic best: Totally unrestrained and supremely self-assured, Tarantino has manufactured a great big gob of eye candy -- a flamboyantly excessive piece of entertainment that reflects not just his reverence for movies but also his love of the filmmaking process. Remarkably, the movie lacks the witty, hard-boiled dialogue that helped build Tarantino's fan base. Not that it’s really missed, as the fast-paced, blood-soaked mayhem manages to mesmerize just the same, and certainly whets appetite for Vol. 2. Ed Hulse, Barnes & Noble

June 23, 2008: I absolutely loved this movie and its sequel, and it was a gateway for me to other films by director quentin tarantino and others. people think that tarantino wanted us to take the gore seriously instead it was a comedy mechanism, and i find it a little disturbing that people think that they should take it seriously, because it was so blatenly fake. truthfully the violence isn't that bad, yes it is worse than that of other movies, but the gore and violence is so artificial that it isn't sqeamishly unbearable. also, for you to watch a quentin tarantino movie you have to know quentin tarantino and his style of directing. he very frequently takes elements from other movies and apply them to his, so the claim that this movie is plaigerism would be correct, but not fair i mean look at pulp fiction that movie cranks out references and material from other movies almost non-stop, and yet it is a great movie. and if you are so worried about you children watching it don't let them. i think this is more of a defense than a review, but i extremely adore and enjoyed this movie along with volume 2.

May 17, 2007: This is by far Quentin's Best! I went behind my parent's back to see this film, and have bought it. I waited months to see this film about revenge! Uma Thurman is now my favorite actress, i even liked her in "My Super ex Girlfriend." This film is cheezy gore, so people afraid of blood can laugh during this sleaze-filled-saga. And this is only the first half! The scenes in Anime, though? Come on, Quentin! But the scenes she kills, the movie explodes with violence. I loved the crazy 88, but even the small scenes (Vivian Green) were amazing. This is not a Quentin drag on film. In fact, there are little scenes that don't end into a severed head or a ripped out tongue. Beats even Pulp Fiction & Death Proof! Don't miss this revenge film best served cold...
