Before Harry Potter ever went to Hogwarts, Japanese animation master Hayao Miyazaki spun a charming tale about a young witch-in-training in his 1989 feature Kiki's Delivery Service. Thirteen-year-old Kiki leaves her home for one year to become an apprentice witch and learn how to live on her own. Moving into a coastal town with her talking cat, Jiji, Kiki struggles to fit into her new environment and opens her own delivery business courtesy of the only magical power she's good at: flying on her broomstick. Along the way, she makes new friends, struggles with the temporary loss of her magical abilities, and finally gains much in the way of self-confidence. A gentle coming-of-age story closer in tone to Miyazaki's Academy Award-winning Spirited Away than to his adventure film Castle in the Sky, Kiki is a movie that is low on conflict but high in subdued grace notes. Audiences can expect all the usual from a good Miyazaki film: strong storytelling, a child's sense of wonder, and gorgeous animation. Disney's fine English dub features voice stars Kirsten Dunst (as Kiki), Matthew Lawrence, Janeane Garofalo, Debbie Reynolds, and, in one of his last performances, Phil Hartman (as Jiji). October 10, 2009: It is a very good story about this young witch, KiKi when she turned 13 years old she needed to go out live one year on her own as the tradition requirement for the witch. She started as a not so sure of herself and did not know what to do with her life and she had no idea what her epecial talents were. As the journey went on she met new friends along the way and in the process of setting herself up for the delivery service she met some challenages and she was able to solve them on her own and in the end she became more confident about herself and knowing what she wants to do with her life. It is a fun and entertaining movie for the whole family to watch. My 2 year old has watched this movie for at least 50 times already. The characters are cute and lovely and the story is engaging and has good messages to teach the children to be responsible, self-confident, reliable and be your personal best no matter what you do in your life. An excellent movie.

May 09, 2009: This is an excellent movie for the entire family to watch together! Kiki is a young girl, 13 years old, and a witch-in-training. She goes out to make it on her own for a year. She finds a new city to live in, where there aren't any witches living, and settles in with a couple who run a bakery. Her best (and almost only) magical skill is flying, so she becomes an aerial delivery girl. She gets into many different situations and meets many different local people. (Note: There is little or no intolerance or prejudice against witches displayed.) She even meets a boy who's as much into flying as she is (with a flying bicycle he invented). She gets sick and suffers a crisis of confidence, but regains her faith in herself. Everything ends well for her. I especially recommend this movie for families with younger children. Even the littlest ones won't find anything scary in it, and the older ones (and the adults) will have a great time watching it again and again to find ever more in it to enjoy and discuss and learn from. The movie is originally from the late '80s, but has stood up well over time. Disney re-released it in an American-dubbed version several years ago. That's the version to get; it's got a second disc of bonus features that are fun and educational to watch. I also would recommend any other animated movie by Hayao Miyazaki; search his name in the B&N search ber and you'll come up with half a dozen or so different movies that the whole family will enjoy again and again.
