Editorial Reviews

It’s not often that a sketch comedy show becomes groundbreaking television, but when it does, you know to stick around just to see what happens next. For five seasons, The Kids in the Hall -- a Canadian comedy troupe featuring Dave Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney, and Scott Thompson -- blasted through preconceived notions of what made people laugh. In this universe, all female characters are played by the Kids (in drag), a man who crushes people’s heads is funny, and a guy with a cabbage for a head isn’t all that weird. Kids in the Hall ran for five seasons in Canada and aired in the U.S. on HBO, where the Kids’ irreverent comedy went uncensored. But for fans who know the show from Comedy Central, where the occasionally colorful language required editing, the DVDs will be and eye-opener. Kids was an early gay favorite for its use of Out characters, such as Scott Thompson’s hilarious Buddy Cole. The bar he runs, Buddy’s, is the site of his one-on-one chats with the audience on everything from race relations to the bad manners of dinosaurs. Each Kid has his own strengths, but overall the Kids are resilient actors, playing multiple roles over the course of the season. The pre-News Radio Dave Foley cements the cast, often playing the company CEO or the mother. Bruce McCulloch, who’s on the short side, often plays annoying little boys. Kevin McDonald is sometimes cast as the wife, or a flustered customer, while Mark McKinney, with his penchant for accents, often plays crazy guys (like Mr. Tyzik, the above-mentioned head-crusher). The Kids wrote most of the material themselves, which lends a brilliant idiosyncrasy to the production; something that plays out especially well in this marathon DVD format. Also included in the set is 30 minutes from a live Kids show at the Rivoli Theater, as well as commentaries from the Kids and an interview with executive producer Lorne Michaels (of Saturday Night Live).
