One of the most commanding figures in American film history, John Wayne drew audiences to the theater no matter what the overall quality of the work itself. That magical essence is given a strong test in this five-film collection, which features a bevy of atypical Wayne projects. Tay Garnett's Seven Sinners (1940), the first of three films that paired Wayne with the equally iconic Marlene Dietrich, takes place on a South Seas island where a naval lieutenant is captivated by a sultry saloon singer. (Watch out for a rollicking bar brawl that demolishes nearly the entire saloon set.) Henry Hathaway's Shepherd of the Hills (1941), the Duke's first Technicolor film, casts him as an Ozark native sworn to kill the man who abandoned his mother. Veteran star Harry Carey -- one of Wayne's idols -- nearly steals the show in a pivotal supporting role. Pittsburgh (1942) reunited the starring trio of that year's The Spoilers: Wayne, Dietrich, and Randolph Scott. The male leads play squabbling miners who, over a period of several decades, become titans in the coal industry. Jet Pilot (1957), produced by Howard Hughes and directed by Josef von Sternberg, sat on a shelf for seven years after being completed -- and with good reason. Starring Wayne as a Cold War-era flyer and Janet Leigh as a Russian pilot (!), the film has, shall we say, novelty value. Almost as deliciously offbeat is The Conqueror (1956), a well-made, if not very convincing, action film with Big John cast as Genghis Khan. This Golden Turkey Award-winning must-see's stilted, faux-Shakespearean dialogue may remind some of the iambic-pentameter-fancying frontiersmen of David Milch's Deadwood, but even the Bard might shudder at the comparison.
