Editorial Reviews

A former Los Angeles cop is relegated to watching over the tiny town of Paradise, Massachusetts, in this prequel to the highly rated made-for-television movie Stone Cold (2005). Adapted from the writings of author Robert B. Parker, Jesse Stone: Night Passage explores disgraced transplant cop Jesse Stone's (Tom Selleck) attempt to adjust to life in New England after being booted from the LAPD for drinking on the job. Taken slightly aback when he shows up slightly tipsy for his interview and is instantly championed by powerhouse Paradise businessman Hasty Hathaway (Saul Rubinek), new arrival Stone grows downright suspicious when his predecessor is discovered dead shortly thereafter. While he may have a bit of a drinking problem, Stone's observational skills are still leagues sharper than most teetotalers', and later, between melancholy midnight conversations with his ex and a discreet affair with the city attorney (Polly Shannon) the troubled lawman takes on an abusive husband while constantly keeping his ear to the ground to getter a better grip on the town's shady goings-on. April 21, 2009: If you're interested in the Jesse Stone video "series", this DVD is the 1st. 2nd="Stone Cold", 3rd="Death in Paradise", 4th="Sea Change" and 5th="Thin Ice". Start here....they really should be viewed in sequence. The series is outstanding -- even if you've never read a Robert B. Parker novel. The movies are a supreme example of Parker's sparse and engaging dialog. Selleck does an astounding job in the role and pulls off the character superbly. Top it with a score that is evocative and an instant signature to the series (it sticks with you) and you find yourself immersed in the small town of Paradise and empathizing with Jesse Stone's struggles.

March 21, 2009: Tom Selleck is that kind of artist who will make a character his own in such a way that would instantly render any other actor playing the same role as somehow false. I wondered while watching this first in the series of TV movies based on Robert B. Parker's Jesse Stone books if Mr. Parker had Selleck in mind while writing the character. I can't imagine anyone else as Stone, the disgraced alcoholic (and yet somehow still puppy-dog adorable) ex-LAPD homicide cop who comes to Paradise, MA to take the position of Chief of Police - a position he himself acknowledges is his last and only chance to stay a cop. Selleck's Stone is instantly likable... and you immediately wish the Chief of Police in your town would take such an interest in his citizens!
